Workshops For Spring ~ Check Out New Events

What’s happening here at Holly Hill?
I will be holding workshops every 2nd Tuesday and 2nd Saturday of each month here at Holly Hill. With this format everyone will know what the dates are and be able to plan accordingly. As before, I really like to hold workshops for your personal groups of 6-12 people so I encourage you to get your own group of friends together for a fun day at Holly Hill.
This workshop is always fun. We will learn several new ways to present unusual gifts from the kitchen in varied price ranges.
Book your own workshop with six to ten people and choose your own date.

The Wednesday luncheon is still on going. I start serving at 12:00 until it’s gone. Reservations are not required but advised. During winter months the numbers are either way up or way down so it helps when you give me a call before you come. I continue to enjoy trying new recipes on Wednesdays and appreciate all of you brave enough to sample.
Speaking of new recipes; I am diligently working on my cookbook. Many of you have requested that I print a cookbook and those requests are such an encouragement. What a big undertaking! Actually I have had plans for such a project for many years so it’s time to make it happen. We have an on-going recipe contest on this web site so I welcome any of you to enter and submit a recipe to my book as well.
This is a great time of year to think about gift certificates. An overnight stay at the B&B is a wonderful way to express your love for family and friends. We also offer “gals night sleep overs” which can include dinner and a workshop, tea parties, and birthday parties.
The 3rd Monday of each month is “Beauty Shop Day”. I have several friends that are beauticians and most are off on Mondays. I reserve this day for you to bring your friends to lunch. Just call for more information.

Now Available ~ Private Kitchen Consulting

This is a service that is available right in your own home. The consultant offers hundreds of tips, shortcuts and advice that are a result of 40 years of experience in the kitchen. Subjects range from simple foods to gourmet; cooking healthy and using herbs as well as creating a more efficient kitchen. After an initial consultation we will build a plan to address a few or all of the following criteria:
• Specific Cooking Classes
• Kitchen Inventory and Organization
• Entertaining
• Shopping For Needed Items
• Stocking A Pantry And Freezer
These services are also available with classes held at Holly Hill; however, meeting in your kitchen will be of most value to you. Basic rates are $35 per hour after an initial first consultation of $50 for up to 2 hours. Advance payment is necessary. There is a 60 cent per mile charge for over 30 miles of travel to your home. Our services include a simple contract to insure the expectations of both parties. The consultant reserves the right to deny any person services at their home if the situation does not meet safety guidelines. If you know of someone who could benefit from our Kitchen Consulting you might choose to purchase a gift certificate.
Specific Cooking Classes: Listed here are some suggestions of subjects that you might choose to cover in a class: cooking to fit your family’s needs, cooking on a budget, instruction for certain food groups such as breads, pie crust, desserts, or healthy entrées, cooking to fit a lifestyle change, and last minute meals. Classes are not limited to these subjects.
Example: Learn to easily prepare several kinds of pie crust; it’s easier than you think.
Kitchen Inventory And Organization: Together we will inventory your kitchen to access your needs then discuss how we might better organize your space. It is very difficult to enjoy cooking in an unorganized kitchen. Even the smallest of spaces can be very productive and efficient; sometimes more so than in a very large spacious kitchen. We will also cover what basic utensils and appliances every kitchen should be equipped with and what items best serve your lifestyle. For the more experienced cook we will cover specific desires and new ideas.
Example: Why several chefs have said they would like to cook in small kitchen at Holly Hill as opposed to the large professional show kitchens.
Entertaining: Many people would love to entertain more often but they may be insecure about cooking for and serving others. We will inventory your serving pieces and talk about what type of gatherings you like to host. If you are concerned about one or two big events each year we will cover those in detail. There are many wonderful easy and quick recipes that will please both you and your guests without being a challenge for you.
Another concern about entertaining is your table lay out. I call this creating table scapes. Example: We will discuss simple ways to use things around your house to create beautiful ways to display your foods for entertaining.
Shopping For Needed Items: There are several wonderful kitchen supply stores in our area. There are many things to consider when shopping for new kitchen items. It can be quite overwhelming when we have so many choices. You probably know many people who have received as gifts or purchased kitchen equipment that has been used only once or twice. With years of kitchen experience the instructor will guide you in purchasing quality items not necessarily the most expensive. Certain materials are more durable and also safer resulting in saving you money, time and energy.
Example: Why stainless steel is so important in the kitchen.
Stocking A Pantry And Freezer: A successful cook has a well stocked supply of regularly used items. Several trips to the supermarket are not only wasteful of your time and money but makes cooking a chore. Putting together a meal using only what you have on hand is very rewarding. In this class you will learn to stock basics for the types of meals that you most often cook as well as learning to be creative with what you have. Example: How easy it is to build a meal around one cup of rice a package of ground beef or a couple chicken breasts.
We have a desire to help more people begin to cook at home and eat out less. Not only does it improve family relationships and values but cooking and serving others is a great way to show your love and generosity. Time in the kitchen builds creativity and self esteem, makes great memories and steers us towards a healthier lifestyle. If we can assist you or someone you love in the kitchen please contact us by email through the web site.

Fall Festival 2003 - "Christmas In October"

Crisp morning
air and warm afternoons welcomed guests to Holly Hill for Fall Festival 2003,
"Christmas In October." The music of sweet voices blended with an array
of stringed instruments and danced through the pines. A total of ten
ornamented trees adorned the rooms and porches in the farmhouse, decorated
and ready for the holidays.
Traditional house tours and garden
tours highlighted the festivities. A ring of the old bell signaled the
beginning of each garden tour hosted by Martha Crawford. Her informative
and delightful lectures captivated groups as they meandered down the maze
of garden paths on Holly Hill.
The staff served mouth-watering, old time favorites
for lunch. Hot Water Corn Bread, Black Eyed Peas, Greens, Baked Sweet
Potatoes with Sweet Cinnamon Butter, and Kathryn's Gingerbread brought smiles
to folks and reminded them of the good old days and grandma's kitchen.
Thanks to
all of you who attended this fun event. Vendors, greeters, kitchen help,
parking help and musicians all deserve an extra thank you. Holly Hill
buzzed with excitement each morning as vendors arrived early to set up booths
with plants and hand crafted items. The following identifies a special
group of vendors who helped make this festival a big success.
Margie McCoy, with the Native Plant
Society, brought a variety of trees, shrubs and perennials. Margie and
her daughter Belinda are educating people about native plants and making them
available to purchase.
Jams and jellies by Betty Carter welcomed shoppers
into Martha and MaryLynn Crawford's booth. The wonderful aroma of herbs
and floral scents delighted guests as they selected plants, hand made bears,
dolls and other specialties.
Diane and Allen Weatherford added old time
lye soap to the shopping list. Buyers were lured to their booth by the
enticing aromas of several varieties like "Molly's Best" goat milk soap.
Eiledon Farms' very own goat contributes to this number one seller.
A booth with vintage birdhouses, bird feeders
and potting benches was a fun place to shop. Donna and Alvin Cox displayed
their special touch for creating unusual garden items. Under the tin
roof at the well house sat rows of hand carved Santas, angels and snowmen.
Wood carver Bob Linthicum turns out hundreds of collector items each year.
His wife Barbara adds the finishing touch with her paints, each one unique
for collectors and first time buyers.
Does your
wardrobe need some sparkle? Joann McConnell and Carolyn Malcolm bring
together beads and wire to form unusual jewelry. Call them what you
will, Beader Flies or Glitter Flitters, you'll get hooked on these darling
butterflies and bugs to adorn your sweater, hat, purse or towels. If
a big beautiful Mama Bahama bug on your shoulder isn't enough you are sure
to want one of Joan Willeford's hand knitted boas. Unlike gaudy, bright
feather boas, these tastefully created wraps will double as a neck warmer
or add a bit of class to your favorite suit or party dress.
Barbara Stone
offered a variety of herbs from her new business, Green Thumb Herbs.
Barbara loves plants and likes to teach about gardening organically.
We are excited for Barbara as she builds her herb business.
Judith Bledsoe is an artist and a seamstress creating beautiful vintage clothing.
Hours of fine stitching are required to complete one of her works, which may
be a baby bonnet or a little girl party dress. We can't forget
the candles in lots of mouthwatering scents. Charles Elingburg brought
his locally poured Cass Candles for everyone to smell, and then take home.
Who can resist a new holiday scent to fill the house?
